GEO glossary for Italian content
This glossary collects GEO terms as I use them in my work on Italian content. Each entry has a short definition that can be quoted on its own, and a note on what to keep separate. Where the Italian term differs from the English one, it is given as well. Version and update date are at the top of the page.
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)
Changes to content and to the website that make it more likely to be used as a source in the answers of assistants and search systems built on language models, such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity.
Not to be confused with traditional SEO, which aims at a position in a list of results. In GEO the result is an answer, and the source may be cited, summarised or ignored.
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)
Optimising content so that it is selected as the direct answer to a question, in assistants and in rich search results. The term predates GEO, and in current usage the two overlap.
Not to be confused with GEO on the strength of the label alone: in day-to-day work they describe very similar changes, and the distinction depends more on who uses the term than on the technique.
Citability
The degree to which an AI system can extract a piece of content and attribute it to a precise source: self-contained statements, data with a stated method, an identifiable author, a visible update date. Italian uses a single word, “citabilità”, for this idea.
Not to be confused with linguistic quality. A page can be highly citable and still contain unnatural Italian, which the assistant then carries into its answer.
Chunking
Splitting content into self-contained blocks, each of which makes sense without the rest of the page. Systems that retrieve text to answer a question usually work on sections of a page, not on the whole page.
Not to be confused with breaking text into bullet points: a block is a section that stands on its own, not necessarily a short one.
AI Overviews
AI-generated summary that Google shows for some search results, with links to the sources it used. In the Italian Google interface the feature is called “Panoramiche AI”, and that is the name Italian users see.
Not to be confused with a conversational assistant: it appears inside the search results page, not in a separate chat.
